Galaxy S8: A tough challenge for SAMSUNG

Samsung has been under a lot of pressure with the Note 7 disaster. Purportedly it lost over $5 Billion and more importantly, its reputation. Now it must prove its mettle to regain the lost reliability and obviously, all eyes are on the upcoming Galaxy S8. Let's see what they are offering with the device:

  • First off it'll be available in two variants; Galaxy s8 and s8 plus.
  • s8 will sport a 5.7inch display while the plus variant will have 6.2 inch display.(mind you it's almost Bezel free display!)
  • As for the hardware, we still don't know whether they'll have the same or different specs.
  • Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection
  • Single SIM (Nano-SIM) or Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)
  • IP68 certified - dust proof and water resistant over 1.5 meter and 30 minutes
  • Android OS, v7.0
  • Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835(octa core) with Adreno 540 GPU
  • 128 Gb internal storage with 6 Gb of RAM
  • Micro SD up to 256 Gb
  •  Dual lens camera with 12Mp primary along with 8Mp for depth of field detection
  • 2160p@60fps, 1080p@120fps, HDR, dual-video rec
  • USB: v3.1, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector
  • Iris scanner (first time in a mobile)
  • No information about battery capacity but it is non removable Li-Ion type.

That's the basic stuff. It appears Samsung is providing almost all the fancy specs with this device. But then, what do people expect from Samsung. I've been pondering over this question and what I feel people generally expect is...

  1. A stable and long lasting battery (you don't need a mobile bomb in your house!)
  2.  A comparable camera quality with iPhone 7 (since they fall in the same price segment)
  3.  A simplified User Interface (no matter what, Samsung Touchwiz is clumsy I think)
  4.  Ample Storage (you can add micro SD though)

Rumour has it that Samsung is planning to sell over 60 Million units of Galaxy s8 this year. Will they succeed in this herculean task? Only time can answer...

That's all for now, Good day.
